Vijaypat Singhania once counted among Indias wealthiest and most influential businessmen saw a dramatic reversal of fortune going from immense wealth to living in a rented home. His life rooted in the textile industry is a story of remarkable success family conflicts and personal loss. While Gautam Singhania the current chairman and managing director of Raymond Group is widely recognized today not many are aware of his father Vijaypat Singhania’s significant contributions to the company.
At the height of his career Vijaypat Singhania was wealthier than prominent figures like Gautam Adani Mukesh Ambani Ratan Tata and Anil Ambani. He took over the Raymond empire after the death of his uncle G.K. Singhania and transformed it into a household name and a global leader in the textile and fashion industry. Early in his career Vijaypat also faced challenges from his cousins who allegedly tried to take control of Raymond following his uncles passing.
As the former chairman of the Raymond Group Vijaypat’s leadership was instrumental in taking the company to new heights establishing it as a dominant player in the industry. His vision and efforts turned Raymond into one of India’s most successful and recognizable brands.
Despite his professional accomplishments and immense wealth Vijaypats life took a turbulent turn due to familial discord. A significant shift occurred when he decided to divide the family business between his two sons. His elder son Madhupati Singhania moved to Singapore distancing himself from the business while Gautam Singhania took charge of Raymond. Over time Vijaypats relationship with Gautam began to deteriorate. Eventually Vijaypat transferred all his shares in the company to Gautam a decision that marked the start of a bitter fallout between the two. Gautam later ousted his father from the family home leaving Vijaypat to face financial and personal hardships.

Apart from his business achievements Vijaypat Singhania is also known for his passion for aviation. Inspired by J.R.D. Tata he has been an avid pilot. Additionally he was considered as a successor to Narayana Murthy as Chairman of the Governing Council at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) until 2012.
Singhania has received several honors throughout his career and is also the recipient of Padma Bhushan which is the third highest civilian honour in the country.
