On the Chinese social media platform Douyin, user Rongrong said his company asked employees to burn cotton and put it in their mouths to overcome their fear and boost their confidence. Despite their fear, all the employees did so for fear of losing their jobs, reports the South China Morning Post. Rongrong said those who swallow fire have to control their breathing, keep saliva in their mouths, and close their mouths at the right time. He also said that only trained people can do this safely.
Rongrong wrote that he was willing to do all of this to prove his commitment and ability to earn money for the company's owners, but he found the task humiliating. According to the South China Morning Post, Rongrong's company is not the first to ask employees to swallow fire. The report said that Renzong, a construction company in eastern China, conducts fire swallowing exercises to train its employees in firefighting techniques.
