The (UKHSA) has extended its amber Cold-Health Alert (CHA) as temperatures see a sharp drop across the nation.

Originally set to end midday on Sunday, 12 January, the alert will now remain in place until 9 am on Tuesday, 14 January, with the forecasting severe cold conditions continuing well into next week.

Dr. Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at UKHSA, previously warned of the risks posed by the ongoing freeze.

"This can have a serious impact on the health of some people, including those aged 65 and over and those with pre-existing health conditions," Dr. Sousa said.

He urged people to check on vulnerable friends, family, and neighbors, as the cold could lead to heightened risks of heart attacks, strokes, and chest infections.

Temperatures are expected to plummet as low as -20°C in some regions, accompanied by snow and icy conditions.

These factors are likely to increase the demand for healthcare services, particularly among vulnerable groups such as the elderly, individuals with chronic health conditions, and rough sleepers.

Amber alerts, under the CHA system, signal potential impacts across the health sector, with risks extending to the general population.

The alert urges a coordinated response from healthcare services, local authorities, and the public.

UKHSA has shared guidance to help individuals stay safe during the extreme cold.

Stay warm indoors by keep living areas heated to at least 18C. If you are leaving your home, wear multiple layers of clothing to trap warmth and limit time outdoors, especially during peak cold hours, and dress warmly if you must venture outside.

Also prepare for snow and ice by keeping walkways clear of ice and ensure vehicles are equipped for winter driving conditions.

The UKHSA advises those struggling to cope with the cold or experiencing financial hardship to seek assistance. Local councils and charities can provide information on accessing warm spaces or obtaining support with heating costs.
