Mera Naam Joker did not enjoy the commercial success that Raj Kapoor had wished for. In fact it became one of the biggest failures of his career a blow that left him devastated both personally and financially. Released in 1970 Mera Naam Joker was a massive financial gamble for the actor-director. The film was an ambitious project in terms of scale and narrative which led him to invest every penny he had including borrowing from the bank. The films failure at the box office not only resulted in the actor going bankrupt but also crushed his dream of making a film that reflected his personal journey as an artist.
In a candid interview with Doordarshan when asked about his favourite film Raj Kapoor likened his attachment to Mera Naam Joker to that of a mother and her children emphasizing that every film he made was special regardless of its success or failure.
About Mera Naam Joker
Mera Naam Joker was released in 1970 and starred Raj Kapoor himself alongside his son Rishi Kapoor who made his debut in the film. The ensemble cast also included well-known actors like Simi Garewal Manoj Kumar Dharmendra and Padmini. The film tells the story of a clown whose role in life is to make others laugh even at the cost of his own sorrow. Throughout the film three women shape the protagonist’s life each representing a different chapter of his emotional journey. Known for being one of the longest films in Indian cinema Mera Naam Joker also had two intervals.
