Google and Apple have removed the offline navigation app MAPS.Me from their Play Store and App Store. According to the report, this action has been taken due to MAPS. I incorrectly showed the external boundaries of India.

According to a report by Money Control, in December 2024, the Survey of India (SoI) issued a notice to Google's nodal officer Priyadarshi Banerjee under Section 79(3)(b) of the IT Act, 2000. This notice was regarding the incorrect geographical presentation of the Union Territories of Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh.

Message of removal from Google and Apple Store
The landing page of the MAPS.My app on Google Play Store now shows the message: "We're sorry, the requested URL was not found on this server." Although the report suggests that a notice was sent to Google, it is not clear whether Apple has also received a similar notice. Currently, this app is also not available on the Apple App Store for Indian users.

Government notice sent to MAPS.Me.

Incorrect border depiction: The MAPS.Me app incorrectly depicts India's external boundaries, which endangers the sovereignty and integrity of the country.

Violation of law: It is an offense under subsection (2) of the Criminal Law Amendment Act, 1990 of India.

Need for accurate mapping: The government said that the map used for the country should contain correct and reliable information, particularly with reference to external boundaries and coastlines. Incorrect mapping raises questions about India's territorial integrity.

Blocking request: The notice urged Google to immediately block or disable the app.
