A Brit returning from a holiday to heal a broken heart ran through the plane half-naked and tried to expose himself to fellow passengers before accidentally locking himself in the toilet in a drunken rampage.

32-year-old Jack Breheny embarked on his while being flown back to the UK on a flight from Spain. He is said to have been so drunk he could barely stand as he began shouting and swearing in front of fellow and cabin crew while the was at 30,000 feet.

Breheny had been away with his twin brother in a bid to get over a relationship break up. At one point in his he was unable to unlock the toilet door from inside as he was so intoxicated, leaving staff forced to open it from the outside to free him from the cubicle as he sat inside "screaming".

Police eventually met the flight as it touched down at Airport on October 3, and as he met them, Breheny still had not sobered up. He voluntarily offered out his arms to be handcuffed before promptly overbalancing in his drunken stupour and falling over onto the seats in front of him.

He had to be helped off the plane by a police officer and became abusive as he was put in a cell. Details of the saga emerged at Manchester Crown Court where Breheny, from the Burnage area of Manchester, admitted being drunk on an aircraft.

He faced jail but was handed six months imprisonment suspended for 18 months after claiming he was needed at home to care for his mother, who has a heart condition. The court heard how Breheny had visited Salou in the Tarrago province in North East Spain with his twin brother, Josh, for a week away so he could get over a traumatic break up with his partner.

Josh, a labourer, had paid for the trip as his brother was out of work and living off state benefits. On the day of the incident, the pair were spotted mucking around on the town centre's multi-coloured sign. But trouble arose when Breheny caught the attention of staff aboard Flight LS930 from Reus Airport.

Prosecutor Miss Hayley Parkes said: "During the filght the defendant was apparently running up and down along the plane whilst topless and there were attempts to expose himself and cause disorder. His twin brother who was also sat on the plane tried to prevent him from doing this to an extent but the defendant was shouting and swearing and locked himself in the aeroplane bathroom where he was heard screaming.

"The flight attendants attended to him concerned enough to open the door. The defendant was found fully clothed on the toilet. The flight landed at 10pm and police received a report from attendants that the defendant on the flight was very intoxicated.

"On entering the aircraft, the officers found the defendant sitting with his twin brother and it was immediately obvious that he was heavily intoxicated, However he appeared to be quite compliant and he put his arms our towards the officers which perhaps indicated his awareness of what he had been doing.

"Handcuffs were applied but when he stood up, the defendant fell over onto the seats in front of him. He was walked to the front of the aircraft but it was noted he could not walk unassisted and police had to take his weight to help him get off the aircraft. Once off, he was placed in a police van and taken into custody but his behaviour was becoming more disorderly and he was making threats to officers."

The court heard there were no witness statements available from cabin crew or passengers following the rumpus. In mitigation for Breheny defence counsel Adam Roxborough said: "He had been on a week's holiday funded by his brother and it was a journey being taken following the end of a significant relationship - one which he had taken badly.

"He accepts this was disgraceful and inappropriate behaviour and he is deeply ashamed. He knows it would have caused a significant degree of anxiety on that flight. His shouting from within the toilet occurred because he could not unlock the door - such was the state of his inebriation."

Breheny was also ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work and 15 rehabilitation activity days and was told to pay £150 costs. He was made subject of a nine month alcohol treatment programme. Sentencing Judge Suzanne Goddard KC told him: "Your behaviour was appalling and would have caused distress and upset to those on the plane who had to witness it. They would have been concerned that your behaviour could have got even worse - although in your favour there no violence used or threatened against anybody.

"You have personal responsibilities towards your mother who needs care to a significant extent and clearly if you are to be the sort of son that I'm sure your mother wishes you were, then you would not be drinking alcohol to excess - or even at all. I'm giving you a real opportunity today. If you fail to take it you have no one to blame except yourself. "
