The holiday trend for 2025 is all about merging travel with wellness, as fitness-centric holidays take the limelight. Labelled as the year of 'Holisti-Days', tourists are on the hunt for holistic retreats designed to enhance mental health through relaxation and digital detoxes.

Another emerging trend is 'Efficient Escapism', where brief, activity-filled breaks appeal to travellers with hectic schedules who still yearn for adventure. 'Sightseeing Striders' are also fusing competitive sport with travel, transforming sightseeing into a physical challenge.

A study by Neilson Beach Clubs, as part of its key trends in , revealed that while relaxation remains a priority for many, two-thirds of holidaymakers are seeking vacations that bolster their mental health.

Three-quarters of travellers already incorporate fitness into their trips, with activities like walking, running, and swimming proving popular. Indeed, 29% of those polled said stay active on holiday to help their mental health, while another 29% felt it helped alleviate stress.

As perceptions towards holidays evolve, over half (56%) now believe maintaining health and fitness is crucial while away, with 37% even adhering to their usual gym routines.

David Taylor, chief executive officer for the holiday brand said: “With health and fitness now such an integral part of our culture, people are turning to holidays that have an emphasis on wellbeing over traditional sightseeing offers."

“Previously, going on holiday meant that diet and fitness went out the window, but our research shows people are now looking to stay close to their usual routines even when enjoying some time away,” he added.

However, he stressed that it doesn't need to be an all-or-nothing mindset. "Fitness and wellbeing can be combined with enjoying time off from the everyday routine. A simple change of scenery can inspire you and your family to find time for fitness and relaxation."

The trend for health-centric vacations is on the rise, with a significant number of holidaymakers (31%) willing to shell out more for trips that incorporate wellness and fitness activities.

Among the hot favourites are workout classes, aquatic adventures such as dinghy sailing and wakeboarding, and even competitive events like marathons or 10k runs with 12% of those surveyed having already partaken in race-focused getaways.

When it comes to places to stay, a quarter of travellers choose resorts equipped with gyms and pools, while 17% go for wellness retreats, and 15% are drawn to beach clubs that offer a range of outdoor pursuits.

It's families leading the charge in this shift, with nearly half of parents keen on active breaks to persuade their children in to physical activity instead of passive screen time.

"Limiting screen time means kids can explore new activities like rock climbing or water skiing," Taylor remarked. "It's about finding a balance that works for you, leaving time to soak up the local culture and enjoy the physical and mental benefits of an active holiday."
