Arsenal player ratings vs Tottenham Hotspur as Rice shows Zubimendi what to expect in derby win

Arsenal took a big step forward to better form and two points closer to league leaders Liverpool with a big win in the North London Derby. After a very tough week, this result will certainly do wonders for the side’s confidence.

Son Heung-min hit Arsenal with a sucker punch midway through the first half, a poorly-cleared cross fell to the feet of the South Korean, whose shot then deflected off William Saliba to beat David Raya. However, it would be a Spurs player to give Arsenal a gift as Dominic Solanke deflected the ball into his own net from a corner.

Leandro Trossard, who ironically was last to touch the ball before the corner for the Gunners' opener was given, then smashed in a shot which Antonin Kinsky should really have done better with.

Here's how football.london rated the Gunners players individually in the match.

David Raya – Tested midway through the first half by a Dejan Kulusevski chance from close range which the Spaniard did well to get down and meet. Little the keeper could do from the Son goal after the deflection beat him. 7

Jurrien Timber – Timber manages to glide through games, making contributions where supporting the attack and very rarely putting a foot wrong. He has needed to partner with right-footers since Bukayo Saka’s injury which has perhaps lessened his chances to overlap but he continued to be solid. 7

William Saliba – Sadly the man on the end of Son Heung-min's shot which allowed the ball to beat David Raya. Nearly allowed Son another chance at goal after losing it to the Spurs talisman but thankfully watched the resulting shot go wide. 6

Gabriel Magalhaes – The Brazilian produced a brilliant tackle to prevent Dominic Solanke a tap-in in the first half, and did so again in the second half. Solid again at the back and the mistake from the game against Manchester United was clearly in the rear-view mirror. 8

Myles Lewis-Skelly – Every week I find myself writing more complimentary things about an 18-year-old who, despite his talent, few would have predicted he would break into the team quite like this. The confidence he possessed to hold off Spurs forwards and then beat a man before finding the right pass: excellent. 8

Thomas Partey – Was poor in defending the move which led to the corner for the Tottenham opener. He also gave away the ball near his own box leading to a Spurs chance that was missed. But won the ball back well for Trossard's goal. 6

Declan Rice – As usual, the deliveries from his corners were immaculate and contributed to yet another goal. But his midfield play was dominant and with hope of Martin Zubimendi potentially partnering him soon, the No.8 role suited him on this particular evening. 8

Martin Odegaard – So much again to like about what Martin Odegaard is bringing to the team after shaking off the post-illness problems and finding his creative spark once again – plus his corner deliveries were significantly improved too. A great pass to Declan Rice on the counter created an opportunity that deserved a better end product. 7

Raheem Sterling – Starting just his second Premier League game of the season so far, Raheem Sterling was bright for the first half and into the second and was creating problems down the right-hand side, as well as doing his bit from a defensive point of view. He did continue to frustrate though as in moments where you think he’s going to take a player on, he continued to hesitate. 6

Leandro Trossard – Perhaps a surprise to see the Belgian start ahead of Gabriel Martinelli, who had to make do with a place on the bench. When given the opportunity to strike, he took it, thundering a shot low and deceiving the Spurs keeper Antonin Kinsky. 8

Kai Havertz – In the days following the defeat to Manchester United, Kai Havertz was attacked online by so-called supporters and the roar at the sound of his name before kick-off hopefully provided a better glimpse of what those in attendance truly felt and how those online are not a representation of the wider view.

He did have a great chance from a corner which he leapt well to reach before heading just wide, and put another header straight at Kinsky. He worked extremely hard throughout the game, skewing to the right quite often too. 6

Substitutes:

Gabriel Martinelli – Replacing Raheem Sterling, the Brazilian moved to the right-hand side. Certainly providing a more direct approach than the loanee, he couldn't quite find the key moment either. 6

Kieran Tierney – Replacing Leandro Trossard, perhaps to give Lewis-Skelly more defensive support against the running of Kulusevski and Johnson. He played an excellent pass into Odegaard which should have resulted in a goal. 6

Oleksandr Zinchenko - Was not on the field long enough to influence the game. n/a

Mikel Merino - Was not on the field long enough to influence the game. n/a
