Letsile Tebogo, the 200-meter Olympic champion for Botswana, will start his season on March 25 at the Maurie Plant Meet in Melbourne, Australia, with a 400-meter event. Tebogo will begin his season in Australia with the goal of winning the gold medal at the World Championships later this year.
On Tuesday, the athlete made the announcement on social media, and on Wednesday, Athletics Australia confirmed that he will be competing in the continental tour gold event. In a statement, Tebogo hinted that he would be taking on the 400-meter challenge in the season opener. “The wait is over, the dates are in, and the countdown begins; the first race of the season is confirmed,” he said.
According to Xinhua, the 21-year-old Olympic 200-meter champion will start his season by competing in the 400-meter event at Lakeside Stadium with a view on the 2025 World Athletics Championships in September in Tokyo.
Tebogo has performed well in the 400m and hasn’t ruled out the prospect of participating in the distance at major championships in the future, although mostly competing in the shorter sprints of the 100 and 200 meters. In addition to anchoring Botswana’s 4×400-meter relay team to silver at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, he now has a personal best time of 44.29 seconds in the 400-meter event, recorded in March 2024.
Letsile Tebogo, sometimes known as “Schoolboy,” became Botswana’s first Olympic gold medalist when he won the gold medal in the 200-meter race at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Tebogo won a silver medal in the 100-meter event and a bronze in the 200-meter event, making him a double medalist at the 2023 World Championships. The youthful sprinter won the 100-meter championship at the 2021 and 2022 World U20 Championships, earning him two gold medals.
