Homebase is due to close 13 of its stores across the UK this month after .

was forced to call in by administrators in November last year, blaming weaker consumer confidence and spending post-pandemic and the crisis for its losses.

came amid reports that banking giant Wells Fargo opted not to extend the retailer's lending facility due to concerns about its finances.

Announcing the collapse last year, Homebase chief executive Damian McGloughlin described the last three years as "incredibly challenging" for DIY stores.

He said: "Against this backdrop, we have taken many and wide-ranging actions to improve trading performance including restructuring the business and seeking fresh investment. These efforts have not been successful and today we have made the difficult decision to appoint administrators."

The chain later struck a deal with retail group CDS - which owns The Range - for up to 70 of its stores, helping to save around 1,600 jobs.

B&Q has also agreed to take control of five branches as part of the deal earlier this month, taking over sites in Altrincham in Greater Manchester, Basingstoke in Hampshire, Biggleswade in Bedfordshire, Leamington Spa in Warwickshire, and Worcester in Worcestershire.

These stores are expected to be converted into B&Q sites in the spring, but the future of around 49 Homebase stores still remains undecided.

But Homebase has now confirmed that 13 of its stores will be closing for good in January, although the exact dates for each are yet to be announced. The full list of sites shutting their doors this month are:

  • Bradford

  • Broadstairs

  • Cheltenham

  • Colchester Stanway

  • Coventry

  • Derby Chaddesden

  • Gloucester

  • Hull Hessle

  • London Streatham Vale

  • Oban

  • Oldbury

  • Romford

  • Wolverhampton

Closing down sales have also been launched at several stores across the UK and Homebase workers are being consulted and supported as negotiations continue.

CDS has confirmed nine Homecase sites will be turned into The Range stores and it plans to open at least 50 shops in the next four months.

Alex Simpkin, chief executive of CDS Superstores, said at the time: "We've stepped in following the sad demise of the much-loved Homebase brand, which has had a long and previously successful history of helping UK households with their DIY projects and gardening needs, for over 45 years."
