January 21, Havana Miguel Díaz-Canel, the president of Cuba, has denounced “an act of arrogance and disregard for the truth” in US President Donald Trump’s decision to reinstate the island on the US list of state sponsors of terrorism.

“President Trump, in an act of arrogance and disregard for the truth, has just reinstated the fraudulent designation of Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism,” Díaz-Canel wrote on Monday on X.

“This is not shocking. His objective is to maintain the brutal economic war against Cuba in order to acquire dominance.

“The result of the extreme economic siege measures imposed by Trump has been to cause shortages among our people and a significant increase in the migratory flow from Cuba to the United States,” the president of Cuba said in a second post.

Bruno Rodriguez, Cuba’s foreign minister, also responded harshly to the ruling.

“President Trump makes the irrational decision that Cuba funds terrorism when intoxicated. He is aware of his deception. He is certain that Cuban households face harsher penalties and an economic war. Although it may hurt, our people’s unwavering resolve will not be broken. In a post on X, Rodriguez said, “We’ll prevail.”

On January 14, the Biden administration said that Cuba will no longer be listed as a state sponsor of terrorism.

At the time, Havana was “providing support for acts of international terrorism in granting safe harbour to terrorists” by refusing to extradite leaders of a Colombian guerrilla organization who were in Havana for peace talks when a deadly bombing occurred in the South American country. In January 2021, former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo designated Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism.

Cuba, North Korea, Iran, and Syria are the only four countries that have been named state sponsors of terrorism.

In addition to the US embargo that has been in place for 60 years, Cuban leaders have called for their nation to be removed as a state sponsor of terror, which would result in severe economic penalties.

On Monday, President Donald Trump rescinded executive measures from the Biden administration that aimed to lower the dangers of artificial intelligence, imposed restrictions on Jewish settlements in the West Bank, and removed Cuba’s position as a state sponsor of terror.

Following his inauguration as the 47th President of the United States, Trump signed a series of reversals of Biden-era regulations at Capital One arena, including the canceled directives.

Cuba was just taken off of Biden’s terror list. Trump did not provide specific justifications for overturning Biden’s decision in the list of rescinded directives he signed on Monday.

In February 2024, Biden imposed the penalties on several Jewish settlers who were allegedly inciting unrest in the West Bank. Additionally, his 2023 AI edict sought to keep an eye on and control the dangers of AI.
