Talking about the history of Pushkar, the details of its origin are found in many religious texts including Ramayana, Shivpuran and Vishnupurana. However, according to ancient articles, the history of this city is believed to start from the year 1010. According to the Puranas, it is believed that Brahma ji organized a yajna here to create the creation. Due to this, Pushkar is considered the guru of all religious pilgrimages. And for this reason, the journey of Char Dham of any human being is considered incomplete without bathing in Pushkar Lake. It is believed that this lake originated from the fall of lotus flower from Bramhaji's hand. Along with this, the important mention and recognition of Pushkar Lake is found in Sikh and Buddhism besides Hinduism. There are 52 bathing ghats and more than 500 temples around Pushkar Lake. Of the 52 ghats of Pushkar Lake, 10 have also been declared as monuments of sacred importance, in these ghats, Varaha Ghat, Dadhich Ghat, Saptarishi Ghat, Gau Ghat, Yag Ghat, Jaipur Ghat, Karni Ghat, Gangaur Ghat, Gwalior Ghats and Kota Ghats etc. are included. Apart from this lake, devotees and tourists are very attracted to Pushkar due to being the only temple in the world dedicated to Lord Brahma. Originally built in the 14th century, this temple of Brahma ji is considered to be about 2000 years old. Initially, the construction of this temple was started by Rishi Vishwamitra, which was later renovated several times by Adi Shankaracharya. Talking about the mythology of the Brahma temple, once Lord Brahma wanted to meditate peacefully without the obstruction of the demons, for this he was looking for a quiet place. When Brahma was looking for this quiet place, a lotus flower fell from his hand in Pushkar, due to which he decided to meditate and perform in Pushkar. Unfortunately, when Lord Brahma was going to perform a yagna, his wife Savitri was not with him, due to this he had to marry a girl from Gurjar community i.e. Goddess Gayatri, Brahma married Goddess Gayatri and after marrying Goddess Gayatri. Completed the rituals. However, when Brahmaji's first wife Savitri saw her getting married, she became angry and cursed Brahma that she would never be worshiped anywhere by her devotees. Therefore, the Brahma temple of Pushkar is the only place in the world where Brahma ji is worshiped, and due to this, there is no temple of Brahma ji nor is he worshiped anywhere in India except Pushkar.
This Brahma temple, built on the banks of the Pushkar River in early 14th century, is a wonderful example of Indian architecture. Its architecture, religious importance and historical background make it a unique religious place. This temple, mainly from marble stones, is a unique mix of architecture and natural beauty. At the main gate of the temple, the sculpture of Lord Brahma's vehicle Hans is seen. On the walls of the temple, the attractive images of peacocks and the goddess of knowledge and art, symbol of beauty and immortality, have been carved very efficiently. It is also called 'Chaumurti' due to the four faces of the idol of Lord Brahma installed in the temple. Having four faces means that Lord Brahma exists in all four directions and protect his devotees in all directions. Along with the idol of Lord Brahma, idols of his wives i.e. Goddess Savitri and Goddess Gayatri are also installed here.
Among the devotees coming to Pushkar along with the Brahma temple, the Savitri temple located on the Ratnagiri hill here is also very recognized. This temple, dedicated to Goddess Savitri, wife of Lord Brahma, is situated on the highest peak of the hill, due to which it is a little difficult for the devotees to reach here. Despite being dedicated to Lord Brahma's first wife Savitri, you will get to see the idol of both his wives i.e. Goddess Savitri and Goddess Gayatri. The idols of these two goddesses located in the temple are said to be close to the 7th century.
Along with this grand temple dedicated to Savitri Devi, there is also a lot of recognition of the Papa Mochani temple among the devotees who come here. The temple, dedicated to Brahma's wife Devi Gayatri, has the sin of the sin of a sprain. It is also believed that she is a powerful goddess who liberates devotees from sins. According to the Puranas, Ashwatthama, son of Gurudrrna, went to this temple and pleaded for salvation, due to which this temple also gets connected to the story of Mahabharata.
Apart from Brahma Ji, Pushkar is also very famous for the Varaha temple of Lord Vishnu located here. The construction of this temple was originally started in the 12th century, but after it was destroyed by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, it was rebuilt by Raja Sawai Jai Singh II of Jaipur in seventeen hundred twenty -seven. In this temple, the idol of Lord Vishnu has been installed as the third incarnation Varaha i.e. wild boar.
Apart from Lord Vishnu, the Opteshwar temple dedicated to Mahadev is also one of the major religious places of India. The Shivling of Swayambhu Mahadev is located about 15 feet below the earth in this magnificent temple, built in the early 12th century. One of the most viewed temples in Rajasthan, the Oteshwar Temple is a unique mixture of medieval architecture and spiritual significance, which also attracts tourists along with devotees. The temple has an idol of five -faced Lord Shiva made of marble, the five mouths of this idol are called Sadyojat, Vamdev, Aghor, Tatpurush and Ishaan. The main temple is decorated with idols and carvings of various Hindu deities from all around. Apart from this, many beautiful carvings and complex decorations have been done on the walls and pillars of this temple which show the spiritual significance of different Hindu deities.
One of the most popular religious places of Pushkar, the old Rangji Temple is dedicated to Lord Rangji, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This temple, one and a half hundred years old, is a wonderful confluence of Mughal and Rajput architecture. This temple was built by Seth Puran Mal Ganeeriwal, a businessman from Hyderabad, in the year eighteen hundred twenty -three. The idols of Lord Rangji, Lord Krishna, Goddess Lakshmi, Godmahi and Shri Ramanujacharya have been installed in the old Rangji temple.
Apart from temples, the Nag Pahar located here is also very famous among devotees and tourists. It is believed that the famous Agastya Muni used to live at this place in Satyuga and due to these attacks, Nag Kund came into existence here. Nag Pahar is also considered to be the abode of Vatu, son of Lord Brahma, he had to stay on this hill for a long time due to a curse of Chyavan Rishi. This serpent, full of religious and natural beauty, is quite famous for spiritual walks among hill devotees and trekking among tourists.
Apart from Hindu temples, many Jain temples are also located in Pushkar, out of which Digambar Jain Temple is the most famous. This temple that is inaugurated by gold is built with sandstone, which represents Jainism worldwide. Along with Hinduism, Pushkar Dham has a lot of recognition in Sikhism. Guru Nanak Dev Saheb, the first Guru of Sikhs, returned from his south journey, stayed at the Pushkar pilgrimage and performed religious practice, due to which people of Sikh community around the country and the world have deep faith in Pushkar. Apart from this, Gurugovind Singh, the tenth Guru of Sikhs, also stopped in Pushkar for a long time and inspired the locals with their teachings.
