Manchester United have made contact with Lyon about the potential signing of attacking midfielder Rayan Cherki before the January transfer deadline, according to reports. However, Ruben Amorim could be thwarted by Premier League rivals, with Liverpool and Tottenham also mooted as suitors.

United will complete at least one signing before the clock strikes 11pm on February 3. Lecce left-wing-back Patrick Dorgu is set to undergo a medical in Manchester as early as today before sealing his £29million move.

But the Red Devils have also been tipped to pursue attacking reinforcements if Marcus Rashford or Alejandro Garnacho depart.

According to , Cherki has emerged as a genuine option and is available for as little as £18m, with his representatives actively seeking a new club.

United, along with Liverpool, are said to have enquired about the exciting 21-year-old, but a summer deal currently looks more likely.

It's claimed that Tottenham are also in the frame, showing initial interest, but Ange Postecoglou's current focus is recruiting a centre-back in the coming days.

Lyon are under pressure to raise funds by selling Cherki, who has accumulated five goals and eight assists in 24 games in all competitions this season.

Since graduating from the Ligue 1 outfit's youth ranks in November 2019, he has made 165 senior appearances, registering 22 goals and 33 assists.

The report adds that Cherki also has admirers beyond the Premier League, and Bayern Munich are currently at the front of the queue when it comes to the level of interest.

Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen, French rulers Paris Saint-Germain and Serie A high-flyers Atalanta are also in the picture.

Atalanta are said to be willing to part ways with £16.7m to secure Cherki's services this window, but the midfield ace, who also plays on the wing, is reluctant to move to Italy.

Amorim has remained coy when discussing United's recruitment prospects midway through his first season at the helm.

Ahead of this evening's Europa League clash against FCSB in Bucharest, the 40-year-old expressed how challenging it is to do business in January.

"This window is always really, really difficult, and we don't want to make the mistakes of the past," Amorim explained.

"We also have to understand the club's situation. A lot of things are changing, so we have to be careful in this type of window.

"You guys know the situation of the club at the moment, so it's nothing new."
