Google Layoffs: Google is reportedly planning its first round of layoffs in 2025 as the CEO Sundar Pichai-led tech giant is offering voluntary exit deals to some of its employees. According to a report Google has launched a “voluntary exit programme”  for employees working in Android and Pixel teams as well as others involved in several other projects aside from Google Search and Deepmind which are reportedly not covered under the voluntary exit programme. In a memo to employees Rick Osterloh Googles Senior Vice-President of platforms and devices announced that employees who choose to take the voluntary offer will walk be able to away from the company with a guaranteed severance package 9to5Google reported. “This comes after we brought two large organizations together last year. […] There’s tremendous momentum on this team and with so much important work ahead we want everyone to be deeply committed to our mission and focused on building great products with speed and efficiency” reads the memo written by Osterloh. Google Layoffs According to industry insiders the voluntary exit deals could evolve into layoffs if enough employees do not take the buyouts and choose to stay. The news comes months after Google CEO Sundar Pichai had told employees to brace for a “critical year” ahead. “I think it’s really important we internalize the urgency of this moment and need to move faster as a company. The stakes are high. These are disruptive moments. In 2025 we need to be relentlessly focused on unlocking the benefits of this technology and solve real user problems” Sundar Pichai had said at an internal strategy meeting at the Google headquarters in Mountain View California US. Google cuts top managerial positions In December last year Google had reportedly cut top management roles by 10 percent affecting employees occupying top managerial positions. The announcement was made by Pichai during an all-hands meeting where he had stated that the layoffs are a part of Googles yearlong push towards efficiency aimed at simplifying the companys operations and boosting productivity. According to a report by Business Insider the layoffs which affected managerial director-level and vice president positions in Google are in accordance with Googles evolving business goals.
