Manchester City midfielder James McAtee declined to sign a fan's shirt after spotting a badge on his coat, prompting criticism for ruining the child's birthday.

McAtee, 22, spent the last two seasons on loan at and endeared himself to Blades fans after firing them to promotion in 2023. He's back at his parent club this term, and scored his first goal in .

The England Under-21 international was an unused substitute as on Wednesday to seal a spot in the play-off round. After the game, he was greeted by a group of fans while leaving the Etihad Stadium by car.

As the vehicle slows, McAtee begins handing a City shirt to a steward to pass to a young fan. However, he quickly changes his mind, appearing to say "He's got a Sheffield Wednesday top on".

"Imagine traveling all that way, braving the freezing cold after watching a Champions League game, just for your little football-mad 10-year-old to have his birthday night ruined," the child's mother posted on social media. "@jamesmcatee_ had the chance to make a birthday unforgettable-he handed out his shirt, and you should have seen the pure joy on the kids' faces!

"But then, when it came to Oaklan, he changed his mind... all because of a @swfcofficial badge on his coat. Never mind that he was head-to-toe in @mancity gear, having spent all his birthday money in the club shop that night.

"Kids look up to their idols, whether they support a local team or one of the biggest in the . Not everyone can get to the Etihad every week, but that doesn't make them any less of a fan. McAtee's behaviour drew a mixed reaction. While some fans felt he shouldn't have changed his mind at the last minute, others understood his decision given his links to Wednesday's rivals.

"I think he’s right to do that," one wrote. "Can’t be asking for Man City shirts wearing a SW coat, especially when McAtee has links to Sheffield Utd."

Another, however, wasn't so sure. "Played for Sheffield Utd on loan, not from the area so no excuse for this imo," they argued, while others said he should have still given the shirt to the child.
