Martin Lewis’ advice on saying money on your has resurfaced after households were told how much their yearly costs will rise by from this spring.

It was confirmed this week that households in England and Wales will see an average £123 or 26% increase to their yearly water bill from April. The rise, confirmed by industry body Water UK, will take the average water and wastewater bill from £480 to £603 for the next year alone.

But while you can't switch water companies, there are ways to lower your bill. He said: "Do you have more or the same number of bedrooms in your house than people? So three bedrooms, two people, you would say yes. Because water bills are based on the value of your house, the rateable value, so the bigger it is, the more you'll pay, whereas meters depend on how much you use. The less people, the less you use."

Martin recommended using the free calculator on the website to check whether you'd likely save money with a water meter. You’ll be asked questions about your water use, including how many showers you take a week, your dishwasher use and what you’re paying at the moment. The calculator will then give you an estimated cost of what you’d pay on a water meter.

Water meters are free in England and Wales. You’ll need to speak to your water supplier and ask if they can install one for you. If a water company isn’t able to install one - for example, if you share pipes with a neighbour, you can ask for an assessed charge which is roughly equivalent to what you pay on a water meter.

Martin also recommended checking if you can claim free water-saving gadgets through . The gadgets include shower heads which help regulate water usage, tap inserts to regulate water flow, and cistern bags, so each flush uses less water.

Martin said there are also other benefits of water-saving gadgets. He said: "Remember, it doesn't just cut the amount of water you use, but so much of the water we use is heated that it cuts your energy use too... if you're on a water meter you get the double saving."
