Aishwarya Rai is undoubtedly one of the most beloved and admired stars worldwide. From gracing the red carpets of international award shows to making fearless statements on talk shows she has always exuded fearless confidence. Not only has she won the hearts of audiences across the world but she has also built bridges between cultures and broken numerous stereotypes. The actress has been seen on some of the world’s most prestigious talk shows including The Oprah Winfrey Show where she beautifully introduced her culture to foreign audiences in a subtle but strong manner. In one such interview she addressed the misconceptions and stereotypes about India. In 2005 Aishwarya Rai was seen on The Oprah Winfrey Show where she was asked several questions that touched on cultural differences. One of the questions focused on public displays of affection (PDA) which is not widely accepted in India. The actress with her signature elegance talked about the cultural difference by saying “It’s not something commonly seen. People do kiss but it’s more of a private expression not something you’d see on street corners. Art reflects life and that’s how it’s portrayed in our cinema.” The conversation then shifted to premarital sex and the host asked the actress if it was a common practice in her home nation or considered a taboo. To this she responded with a candid statement saying “Broadly speaking it isn’t the good thing to do.” Later the host asked the actress about the misconceptions individuals have about Indians. Aishwarya Rai shared how she often faced the question “Did you study abroad to learn the language?” She was taken aback by this assumption saying “Why would people think that we don’t study English? That really shocked me.” When the conversation turned to family dynamics the host asked Aishwarya Rai about kids living with their parents after marriage a cultural norm in India. In response the actress beautifully explained “In India it’s more about the family about living together and staying connected and that’s probably the most special thing.” Her words showcased the importance of familial bonds in Indian society where staying close to one’s family is seen as a source of comfort and strength contrasting with the Western notion of moving out of the family home after a certain age.
