presenter Ed Balls couldn't hide his shock as the morning show tackled the debate about potentially banning cats in parts of Scotland, leading to mixed reactions from viewers.
The 57-year-old broadcaster was left incredulous as he learned that ministers might introduce legislation to prohibit pet cats in certain regions during preparations for a debate on the subject with co-host Susanna Reid.
"Has the world gone mad," Ed exclaimed, visibly shocked by the proposal to create 'cat containment zones' to preserve birds and other wildlife by restricting feline freedom.
According to The Mail on Sunday, another drastic measure under consideration is the outright ban on cat ownership within these designated areas. The plans follow a report alleging severe ecological impacts inflicted by cats on local bird populations and other wildlife species.
Now, the Scottish Government is considering implementing 'cat containment areas' specifically in areas where wildlife faces significant threats.
In an effort to gauge public sentiment on the issue, Susanna posed the question to Good Morning Britain's audience: "Should we consider banning cats to stop them harming birds?"
The presenter introduced the controversial issue, saying: "The Scottish Government is considering so called containment zones where people would be forced to keep their cats indoors to stop them attacking animals when they're playing."
She then asked viewers: "Let us know what you think." Ed couldn't hide his disbelief as he exclaimed: "Has the world gone mad? You're watching Good Morning Britain on ITV1, lets go to debate that nonsense in a moment."
A poll conducted by the ITV show revealed that a whopping 75 percent of viewers are against the idea of keeping cats locked up. However, discussions on social media site X showed a stark divide among fans.
Supporters of the proposal voiced their opinions with comments like: "Good idea, cats killing the birds and c*****g all over my garden #gmb."
Another frustrated viewer said: "#GMB 'Ban cats to protect wildlife'? A better question would've been about the fact cats are allowed to come into MY garden, kill birds, then do their business in the grass/flowerbeds. It is DISGUSTING - irresponsible owners! Why should WE have to clean it up?"
However, many were outraged at the thought of such restrictions on cats, with one person venting: "What am I watching!? Scotland makes its law to Lock your cats up to stop them from preying on birds? #Peta #GMB @GMB." Another pleaded: "Leave cats alone #GMB."
A cat lover argued, "All cats don't kill wildlife. My ragdoll has never killed wildlife. He's 18 now and still terrified of birds-even small ones who come up next to him and have no worries. They clearly know he's no threat. Cat not interested.#gmb." (sic)
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
