Jamie Carragher has surprisingly revealed he is ‘not ’s biggest fan’ and said the Liverpool midfielder does not provide enough goals in his opinion.
The Hungarian has, in the eyes of most, enjoyed a superb campaign for Liverpool this term and was on target recently in the . But that was just his third Premier League goal of the season, and Carragher feels Szoboszlai needs to add more to his game.
The Liverpool star has produced fewer goals than Josko Gvardiol and Tomas Soucek this season and, to stretch it back further, the former RB Leipzig man has only netted 11 in 75 matches since joining the Reds in 2023.

“I’m not Dominik Szoboszlai’s biggest fan, but he’s got great athleticism. He gets talked about as Liverpool’s no.10 and people say he’s great off the ball, but he’s a no.10 and only scored three goals,” said during Sky Sports’ post-match coverage of Chelsea’s 2-1 win over West Ham United.
The 46-year-old also said Szoboszlai is among the players who if Mohamed Salah does depart this summer.
“I think there could still be more from the two players I’ve just highlighted. They do a lot for the team, Szoboszlai and [Luis] Diaz, but when you look at Szoboszlai, he’s got five goals and assists. You need more from that position.”
Carragher’s comments on Szoboszlai will come as a shock to Liverpool fans - the 24-year-old has been a regular starter when available for the side top of the league this season - and he earned praise from Slot recently, who claimed the midfielder is ‘underestimated’.
“If you zoom in on Dom, I think at the beginning of the season he would have played that ball to Mo [Salah], which most of the time was a very good choice because Mo can definitely score a goal as well,” after Szobszlai scored in win over Ipswich last month. “And now he decided to go for the goal himself and scored the goal himself.
“Nice for him because, in my opinion, he is a bit underestimated. Not by me, but he doesn’t always get the credits for the fact he is very important for this team because his work-rate is un-be-lievable.
“He just keeps on running with the highest intensity, and that is so important for a team that wants to compete for something.”
