ECI bashes AAP over 'repeated pressure tactics' to malign it
04 Feb 2025
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has accused Delhi political parties of using pressure tactics to malign its image.
The ECI stressed that election-related actions are conducted by over 1.5 lakh officials under a strict legal framework to maintain fairness and impartiality.
"The 3-member Commission collectively noted repeated deliberate pressure tactics to malign ECI in Delhi Elections," it said.
But it chose "restraint, absorbing such outbursts with sagacity, stoicism" and declared that it would "not be swayed by such insinuations."
ECI responds to AAP's accusations
Allegations addressed
The ECI's statement comes amid criticism from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), especially Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal for alleged bias.
Atishi on Tuesday said that members of the BJP leader's family were seen "roaming" in Delhi's Kalkaji region (her constituency), in violation of the Model Code of Conduct.
She alleged that she filed a complaint with the Delhi Police over the matter but a case was registered against her instead.
Kejriwal accuses ECI and Delhi Police of supporting 'hooliganism'
Allegations
Kejriwal also accused the ECI and Delhi Police of supporting "hooliganism" against the AAP and shielding BJP workers distributing liquor and money for votes.
He alleged party workers were being assaulted by people associated with BJP candidate Parvesh Verma in New Delhi constituency.
Further, Kejriwal slammed ECI for its action against him for his remarks on "poison" in Yamuna water, which got him notices seeking proof.
ECI dismisses allegations of bias
Bias dismissed
The ECI, however, dismissed allegations of bias and reiterated that it functions under strict constitutional guidelines.
It said all issues raised are addressed through established processes ensuring non-partisan conduct.
The Chief Electoral Officer in Delhi also refuted Kejriwal's claims of intimidation against AAP workers, noting no written complaints were found.
Delhi's 70 Assembly seats will vote on February 5 and the results will be counted on February 8.
