National weather service issues tornado warning with heavy floods in Kentucky

Synopsis

The Federal weather watchdog has issued Tornado Warnings in several counties of the US state of Kentucky. The state is already reeling from major power outages.

A tornado watch has been issued by the National Weather Service for over a dozen counties in south Kentucky on Thursday morning covering areas, like Adair, Allen, Barren, Casey. This alert is set to expire at 11 a.m Eastern Time. The NWS cautions about the likelihood of 70 mph wind gusts, quarter sized hail and potential tornadoes during this period. The tornado watch covered areas stretching from Bowling Green in the west to Magoffin County in the east. Later, Fayette County was taken out from the list.

The National Weather Service stated that multiple rounds of storms, with rainfall passed through Kentucky overnight from Wednesday to Thursday. The worst storms were forecasted to impact areas below the Western Kentucky and Bluegrass Parkways. More storms are anticipated for Thursday morning but are likely to stop around 10 a.m in Central Kentucky. Governor Andy Beshear advised residents to stay updated with the weather reports and remain informed.

On Thursday morning in Kentucky, it was reported that there were more than 3,400 instances of power outages according to the website, poweroutage.us. The counties that have been hit the hardest are Carter, Casey, Fayette, Hart, Rockcastle and Pike. In another outage map, the map displays over 500 outages. A major outage in the Southland neighborhood, to Clays Mill Road, impacted 383 customers. To the electric company’s outage map, a power outage in Woodhill has impacted 97 customers. Power is to be restored by approximately 10 a.m.

A NWS Flood Watch issued a warning for the areas around southeastern Kentucky and in western region. Rainfall around one-two inches is expected in the region and the areas will brace for flooding of rivers and streams. Currently, the Lexington Traffic Management Center reported two vehicles have been stranded in high water on Bowman Mill Road at Old Harrodsburg Road. A flash flood warning remains in effect until 10 a.m. for Bath, Elliott, Estill, Fleming, Montgomery, Morgan, Menifee, Powell, and Rowan counties. In Boyd County many roads are flooded and there have been multiple water rescues according to officials from the Ashland-Boyd County-Catlettsburg Emergency Management Agency. Greenup County Schools have closed Thursday due to high water on the roads.
