Apple Cider Vinegar is streaming on Netflix and the limited series tells the true story of Australian scammer Belle Gibson (played by Kaitlyn Dever). Belle gained a huge online following after lying about having a brain tumour and claiming she used holistic remedies to 'cure' herself.

She set up The Whole Pantry mobile app and wrote a subsequent book full of recipes and tips, claiming to help those with a terminal illness. Deceiving the public further, she lied about donating a huge portion of her profits to various charities.

In the series, Belle met IT consultant Clive Rothwell (Ashley Zukerman) just before she launched The Whole Pantry and she asked for his help when it came to the technical side of creating a website. Kind-hearted Clive was instantly taken with Belle, but she abused his trust.

He became a father figure to her son and helped her officially register her brand, but it did not take long for him to start growing suspicious. After numerous conversations with Belle's mother, it became clear to Clive that Belle was not being honest.

However, because he loved her, he never exposed her and chose to stay by her side, supporting both Belle and her son. Here's what happened to the real Clive.

In 2023 it was revealed Clive, who was much older than Belle, had been seen with another woman.

Belle had previously shared a rental property with Clive, who acted as a stepfather to her son.

Clive paid most of the rent on the home they once shared, and even paid to take Belle and her son on a month-long trip to Africa in 2019.

However, Daily Mail reported Clive had since moved into a new two-bedroom apartment on a different side of town and was seen with another woman, with no Belle in sight.

In 2019, when Belle appeared in court, she in fact claimed she knew little about Clive and what he did for a living.

Investigation reports suggested the contrary, saying Clive had been paying all of her legal fees.

During the hearing, Belle said in a letter to the Department of Justice she owed Clive $90,000, but claimed to "not know" what the money was for.

She would only ever refer to Clive as a "friend", despite rumours they were engaged.
