The Civ 7 release is almost here, and there's a lot to look forward to with the new series' mechanics that should breathe new life into the stalwart 4X turn-based strategy game.
Firaxis is about to open the doors of Civ 7 to eager players who've been waiting almost a decade for the next entry in the series, and whether you're a newcomer or veteran, the developer has a number of franchise firsts on the way for you to tuck into. Coming to , , , and next week, no console is getting left behind, including and players.
The biggest shakeup that might be a bit divisive is the new Age system, that sees a full campaign transition between three Ages: Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern. At the end of each Age is a multi-stage Crisis period, before the Age Transition ushers all players (and any AI opponents) into a new Age. It's at this point that players can select a new civilisation, but there are some caveats, so you can't just choose any, willy-nilly.
Another massive change is Leaders, who can be selected independently of the chosen civilisation, and will be fixed for the course of the campaign; so the leader that you choose at the outset is who you will finish the game with. Unlike past entries, Civ 7 opens up the floor to historical figures who weren't necessarily a head of state, so you can have some fun with that.
Of course, if you picked up the Deluxe or Founders Editions of the game, you'll have a good few days of playtime ahead of the official launch with , but for everyone else, here's exactly when you can start playing on your platform and region when Civ 7 releases on Tuesday, February 11.

Monday, February 10You can preload the game ahead of the Civ 7 release, unless you're on PC, so we can possibly expect a sizeable day one patch based on that.
