Delhi Delhi. Two sources said that around 500 employees are protesting against the suspension of three employees at Samsung's plant in South India and the company has deployed contracted employees to meet the deficiency. This was the second major labor dispute in less than six months at the plant located in Sriperumbdur near Chennai. The plant manufactures refrigerators, television and washing machines and is the fifth of Samsung's $ 12 billion sales in India in 2022-23.
Around 1,800 employees work in the factory. Samsung said in a statement that “most of our employees are devoted to ensuring that the general business operations continue”. Two sources with direct information said that the production has not been affected at the moment as Samsung has called the contracted employees to handle the situation, while the employees who boycott the work are sitting inside the plant and refusing to move. .
The union disputed the fact that there was some disruption, especially in the refrigerator making unit. Last year, hundreds of people went on a five -week strike at the plant demanding high salary and union recognition. The strike ended in October after Samsung agreed to address the demands of employees. Samsung India Workers Union leader A.K. Sundararajan said that the protest would continue as the employees were suspended without hearing to stand outside the company administration's office.
He said, “Discussion with the government is already going on.” The Tamil Nadu state government did not respond to the remarks request. Samsung said that the staff will “be subject to proper disciplinary action after formal investigation and they have been suspended for the work environment and safety of other employees”. This did not clarify what was the cause of suspension. Samsung's statement said, “We continue efforts towards collective agreement with our employees to resolve the issues and for this we are open for smooth interaction by the government.”
