The first day of the week, Monday, is often full of stress and rush. But do you know that many studies have shown that the risk of heart attack is highest on Monday? You will be surprised to hear this, but you will be even more surprised to know the reason behind it.
A study presented at the British Cardiovascular Society (BCS) Conference 2023 has given new information about heart attack. According to this study, there are more cases of heart attack on Monday than on any other day of the week. This research was done by doctors from Belfast Health and Social Care Trust and Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland.
Why does the risk of heart attack increase on Monday?
Researchers examined the records of more than 10,000 patients between 2013 and 2018 who were hospitalized due to the most serious type of heart attack, ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). The study found that the incidence of such serious heart attacks increases by 13% at the beginning of the week (especially on Monday).
What do experts say?
Dr. Jack Laffan, associated with the research, told Daily Mail that such a trend has been seen in Western countries before. According to scientists, the possibility of heart attack is higher in winter and in the morning. Apart from this, a similar pattern has been seen in cases of stroke. Doctors believe that the main reason for this may be the changes in our circadian rhythm (biological clock), which affects the hormone level. Apart from this, the anxiety and stress of returning to work on Monday increases the cortisol hormone level in the body, which can increase the risk of heart attack.
How to prevent heart attack?
* If the symptoms of heart attack are recognized in time, life can be saved.
* Chest pain, which may feel like pressure, tightness or burning.
* Shortness of breath, which may occur with or without chest pain.
* Pain in the arm, neck, jaw, back or stomach, which is often mistaken for a muscle strain or indigestion.
* Cold sweat, dizziness, nausea and extreme fatigue.
