In Indian cinema today achieving a 100-crore box office collection has become quite common. But do you know which Bollywood film was the first to reach this milestone? The 100-crore club in Bollywood started in the late 2000s with films like Ghajini and 3 Idiots crossing the mark in terms of domestic net collections. However there were Indian films much earlier that surpassed the 100-crore mark when international earnings were included. Interestingly the first Bollywood film to achieve this feat was released in the 1980s.
First Indian Film to Cross Rs 100 Crore
Directed by Babbar Subhash Disco Dancer was a musical blockbuster that introduced audiences to the journey of Anil also known as Mithun Chakrabortys character as Jimmy played by Milows his transformation from a street singer to a disco superstar.
Upon its release Disco Dancer performed well at the Indian box office earning over ₹6 crores. However its overseas earnings truly set records particularly in the Soviet Union where it gained immense popularity.
When the film was released in Russia in 1984 it grossed approximately 60 million rubles (around Rs 94.28 crores). With 12 crore tickets sold the film’s worldwide earnings reached an estimated Rs 100.68 crores.
Outperforming Sholay and Holding a Decade-Long Record
Until 1984 the highest-grossing Indian film was the iconic Sholay which had a worldwide collection of ₹30 crores. Disco Dancer more than tripled that figure maintaining its record for nearly a decade until Hum Aapke Hain Koun eventually surpassed it.
This milestone also made Mithun Chakraborty the first Indian actor to star in a 100-crore-grossing film. Even legendary stars like Amitabh Bachchan had not yet reached this mark and the three Khans of Bollywood wouldn’t achieve it until the following decade.
The Musical Brilliance of Disco Dancer
While the film featured actors like Rajesh Khanna Kim Yashpal and Om Puri the true highlight was its music composed by Bappi Lahiri. His unique disco-style compositions captivated audiences worldwide.
Despite having a relatively unknown lead at the time Disco Dancer became a surprise blockbuster. Mithun was not yet an A-list star Rajesh Khanna’s stardom had started to fade and Kim Yashpal was a newcomer. Yet the film left a lasting impact on Bollywood and remains a cult classic today.
