New Delhi: Indian wicketkeeper batsman Sanju Samson has recently had surgery for a finger injury he incurred during the T20I series against England. Despite his attempts Samson had a disappointing series accumulating just 51 runs over five matches before the injury took place in the last game.
In the fifth T20I Samson sustained a finger injury from a delivery bowled by Jofra Archer early in his innings. He was able to score only 16 runs before being substituted by Dhruv Jurel as the wicketkeeper resulting in an unsatisfactory conclusion to his involvement in the series.
Reports from ESPNCricinfo indicate that Samson is likely to be fit for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 scheduled to start on the weekend of March 21-23. His recovery is expected to take about a month enabling him to resume playing competitive cricket.
Samson was unable to play in Keralas Ranji Trophy quarterfinal match against Jammu & Kashmir because of his injury. Furthermore he was not included in Indias team for the upcoming Champions Trophy as KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant were selected as the main wicketkeepers.
Samsons most recent ODI appearance was in December 2023 during which he achieved a century against South Africa. He is set to captain the Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2025 with the goal of enhancing their performance from the previous season where they made it to the playoffs but were eliminated by Sunrisers Hyderabad. After narrowly missing out on the championship in 2022 the Royals will aim to leverage Samsons leadership and experience in the forthcoming season.
