Melbourne [Australia], February 13: According to a statement from cricket.com.au, a record number of Indian cricket fans traveled to Australia to see the 2024–25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
The last Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which was held by Australia in 2018–19, had a six-fold rise in ticket purchases from Indian residents.
In addition to the thousands who acquired tickets via friends and family in Australia, more than 6,000 traveling fans purchased tickets from India. The increase demonstrates how Indian cricket fans are becoming more and more interested in Australian cricket and how much they contribute to Australian tourism.
This Australian cricket season, India sold more foreign tickets than the United Kingdom and the United States combined. With more than two-thirds of the tickets sold to Indian tourists for this Test alone, the Boxing Day Test at the storied Melbourne Cricket Ground was a tremendous success with Indian fans.
With over 5% of all ticket sales coming from outside, the series drew 837,879 spectators, the fourth-highest attendance for any Test series in Australia and the most for any non-Ashes series. At least eight sessions averaged more than 2 million viewers, with 40 sessions averaging more than 1 million viewers, in addition to attendance records plummeting at locations across.
Cricket Australia is dedicated to establishing a friendly atmosphere for all supporters. This includes programs that celebrate Indian and Australian culture and improve the fan experience, such as the Summer Fest at certain stadiums and Indian fan supporter bays.
“We are delighted that Australia has become a pre-eminent destination for Indian cricket fans fuelled by the enormous interest in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series,” stated Joel Morrison, Executive General Manager of Events and Operations at Cricket Australia, according to a statement published by cricket.com.au.
“The passion of Indian supporters helped enhance the electric atmosphere at every ground across the summer,” he said.
“We’re committed to deepening our relationship with cricket fans all over the world and enhancing the fan experience for both local and travelling fans alike,” he said.
“The increasing number of travelling Indian fans this summer highlights Australian cricket’s increasingly important role in facilitating tourism and trade outcomes for governments and businesses across Australia,” he said.
Indian cricket teams will make their comeback to Australia. The women’s squad will play in a seven-match multi-format series in February-March 2026, while the men’s team will play in three ODIs and five T20Is in October-November 2025.
Cricket Australia is thrilled to welcome ardent traveling fans from all around the globe once again for these eagerly awaited tours, which are sure to offer exciting cricket.
