In Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, the respected head priest of the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple, Acharya Satyendra Das, who died yesterday, was accorded ‘Jal Samadhi’ in the sacred Saryu River. In a ceremony that is highly symbolic of the land’s customs and his lifetime commitment to Lord Rama, the spiritual leader who played a crucial part in the temple’s journey for decades was put to rest. Das was given the usual ‘jal samadhi,’ with large stones bound to his body before being submerged in the river, in accordance with the practices of the Ramanandi sect, according to his successor, Pradeep Das.

His lifeless bones were submerged in the holy Saryu River after his death on February 12, 2025, where he received the last honour of being called ‘Jal Samadhi.’Hinduism’s cherished ‘Jal Samadhi’ rite involves submerging the deceased’s corpse in water as a last homage, signifying a return to the cosmic elements.

For Acharya Das, a life devoted to serving Lord Rama was appropriately concluded with this rite near the Saryu River, which is of great spiritual significance to Hindus, particularly at Ayodhya. The river has long been revered by individuals seeking spiritual emancipation since it is said to cleanse the soul. Hundreds of devotees, spiritual leaders, and temple authorities attended to pay their respects and celebrate Acharya Das’ legacy as the ceremony was performed along the riverbanks.
