The Hurt Locker at the Oscars

Reportedly, upon its release, The Hurt Locker became a sensation both critically and during the awards season, amassing nine nominations for the Academy Award. Winning six Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director (making Katherine Bigelow the first woman to win this award), and Best Original Screenplay, it upset James Cameron's Avatar in major categories.

Even so, fans and critics alike were shocked by the deepest snub for Best Supporting Actor extended against Anthony Mackie. The Marvel star gave a strong, compelling performance that won him accolades.

In a conversation with Men's Health, Mackie later confessed that the snub was pretty rough. He said that he had put everything he had into that movie and that award matters.

Mackie, per the report, added that actors try to tell themselves they are in the profession for the work rather than awards. However, when he did that with The Hurt Locker, it hurt him and he had to take a year off.

From The Hurt Locker to Captain America

The Hurt Locker was a defining moment in Mackie's career, but his first real break into Hollywood came with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In an effort to wrench the role from Marvel, he sharply self-pitched. He said that he was the black guy from The Hurt Locker and told them he wanted to work with the production house.

He got their attention and the role of Sam Wilson (The Falcon), which paved the way for him to become the new Captain America.
