The capital of the island, San Juan, is a vibrant city filled with history.

Established around 1521, San Juan became a strategic military outpost for Spain and to protect the island from English and Dutch invasions, Spain built fortifications such as Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal, both of which are popular tourist sites today.

After being ceded to the United States in 1898, Puerto Rico became a US territory and granted citizenship in 1917, later becoming a Commonwealth in 1952.

Though it's a functioning government building, guided tours are available Monday to Friday, offering visitors a look at its lush gardens and interior when the government is not in session.
