Beyond their impressive wealth and opulent lifestyles Indian billionaires are also known for their philanthropy donating crores of rupees to various charitable efforts with names like Ratan Tata Mukesh Ambani Shiv Nadar and Azim Premji being the torch bearers of wealthy philanthropists in the country. However while these billionaire tycoons have donated generously to charities there is one man who stands head and shoulders above the rest with regards to philanthropy not just in India but across the globe Jamsetji Tata the legendary founder of the Tata Group who is recognized as being the worlds biggest donor giving away a whopping Rs 829734 crore to charity during his lifetime. Who was Jamsetji Tata? Born in a Zoroastrian Parsi family in Gujarat on March 3 1839 Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata established the Tata Group in 1868 when when he bought a bankrupt oil mill for Rs 21000 a massive amount at the time and turned it into a cotton factory. Today the Tata Group has transformed into a global juggernaut with over 100 companies spread in more than 100 countries boasting a market cap of $403 billion (roughly Rs 33.7 trillion). Known as the Father of Indian Industry Jamsetji Tata is known for his philanthropic ventures and his ideals have been firmly ingrained in the Tata Groups DNA which remains committed to social responsibility principles laid down by its founder. During his lifetime Jamsetjis philanthropic endeavors had a profound impact on the Indian society especially in healthcare and education that remained his prime focus. The Tata Group Indias largest conglomerate is a name synonymous with philanthropy to the extent that Tata Trusts an umbrella group of charities holds an unassailable 66% stake in Tata Sons -- the holding company of Tata Group. Jamsetji Tata played a key role in establishing some of Indias most acclaimed healthcare and educational instructions most of which are still running to this day. After Jamsetji his sons Dorabji Tata and Ratanji Tata carried forward their fathers legacy of industrial innovation and philanthropy and charted the course for the Tata family to make leaping advances in both business and philanthropic ventures a roadmap which is still followed by the Tata Group to this day. Indias philanthropic billionaires Notably while Jamsetjis philanthropic work remains unmatched other contemporary Indian business tycoons such as Mukesh Ambani Gautam Adani Azim Premji and Shiv Nadar are also known for their charitable contributions. According to EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2021 Wipro founder Azim Premji donated a staggering Rs 9713 crore or Rs 27 crore per day during the financial year 2020-21. Premji has reportedly donated around $22 billon (Rs 176000 crore) over the years making him one of the worlds most generous philanthropists.
