Mahashivratri 2025: In Hinduism, there is a tradition of offering their beloved things in the worship of Gods and Goddesses, which makes them happy and bless the devotees. Some things are necessary in the worship of every deity, while some things are also considered forbidden. Lord Shiva is specially worshiped on the auspicious occasion of Mahashivaratri, but during this time there are some flowers that should not be offered on Shivling, otherwise instead of receiving Shiva grace, the opposite results can be found.
Dhatura, Aak flowers, cannabis and paan have special significance in the worship of Lord Shiva, but there are some flowers that are considered inauspicious to offer them. Among them, Ketki flower is prominent, which is considered to be the favorite of Lord Vishnu, but its use is forbidden in Shiva worship. There is a legend behind it, which is associated with the dominance between Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.
In the worship of Lord Shiva, offering Ketki flowers is considered taboo. According to the belief, once there was a dispute between Lord Vishnu and Brahma, which of the two is superior. To end this dispute, Lord Shiva appeared as a fireplace and ordered both to find its beginning and end. Vishnu ji tried to find its limits towards the earth and Brahma ji towards the sky. When Brahma ji did not find any end, then he made Ketki's flower a false witness and presented it to Shiva. Seeing this, Lord Shiva became angry and prohibited worship of Brahma ji, as well as forbidding Ketki flower in his worship.
On Mahashivaratri, Lord Shiva is forbidden to offer any kind of prickly flowers. It is called Kantakari flower, and it is believed that offering these flowers causes disturbance in the family. Also, stress increases in family life and distances may come in relationships.
The lotus flower is considered dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. According to the scriptures, any object has a relationship with a particular deity and it is not considered appropriate to offer it in the worship of other deities. This is the reason that lotus flower is not offered on the Shivling.
The flower of sunflower is famous for its royal nature, and the use of royal things in the worship of Lord Shiva is considered prohibited. The nature of Shiva is a symbol of simplicity and penance, so only ordinary flowers should be used in his worship.
Special care should be taken during worship on Shivling that the flowers are fresh and completely blooming. Offering flowers are considered inauspicious. The object offered to God should always be pure and pure.
On Mahashivaratri, Shiva gets his special grace by offering Belpatra, Dhatura, Ganga water and Bhasma. On this day, doing Rudrabhishek also fulfills wishes. Taking care in the worship of Lord Shiva, only offer flowers described in the scriptures, so that his grace is attained and happiness and prosperity remains in life.
