In a Champions Trophy Group A match played here on Monday, New Zealand defeated Bangladesh by five wickets, advancing both the Kiwis and India to the Champions Trophy quarterfinals.
Bangladesh and hosts Pakistan, who have lost both of their games so far, were eliminated from the competition as a result of New Zealand’s victory.
With two victories so far in Group A, India and New Zealand both have four points. Each group’s top two teams advance to the semifinals. With 23 balls remaining, New Zealand managed to chase down the mark of 237 thanks to a spectacular century by Rachin Ravindra (112). With contributions of 55 and 30, respectively, from Tom Latham and Devon Conway, New Zealand reached 240 for 5 in 46.1 overs.
Earlier, New Zealand held Bangladesh to 236/9 thanks to a four-wicket haul from Michael Bracewell and two wickets from William O’Rourke.
In a match that Bangladesh needed to win to maintain their hopes of qualifying for the group stages, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto led the team in scoring with 77 runs, while Jaker Ali pitched in at the tail end with 45 runs. In the first game, New Zealand beat the hosts, Pakistan, while Bangladesh fell to India. New Zealand will guarantee their spot in the semifinals if they win this game.
Since Paul Wiseman in 2002, Bracewell was the first spinner from New Zealand to record a four-fer in the ICC Champions Trophy. Having bowled 43 dot balls in his allotted 10 overs, he finished the evening with statistics of 4-26. Additionally, Bracewell’s efforts were the highest ever for a Black Caps spinner in the competition.
Bangladesh was sent in to bat first, and its openers, Shanto and Tanzid Hasan, got off to a strong start. Kyle Jamieson, who was added to the team in place of Nathan Smith, was hammered for a four and six on successive deliveries in the second over as Tanzid took the fight to the Kiwis in the early exchanges.
Before Tanzid opted to escape the shackles by hitting a short ball by Matt Henry for a six over the midwicket boundary, Bangladesh failed to make the most of the middle overs of the first power-play and faced a brief stretch with 11 consecutive dot balls. Later, in the eighth over, the left-handed captain got in as well, hitting Jamieson for three boundaries. Bracewell ended the 45-run opening partnership with his second delivery when the New Zealand captain chose to pass the ball to him.
