Netflix's U-turn: Will now fund Karla's Oscars trip
25 Feb 2025

Karla Sofia Gascon, the first openly transgender actor nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars (for Emilia Pérez), will be attending the ceremony, courtesy of Netflix.

The streaming giant is reportedly paying for her expenses for the event on Sunday at Los Angeles's Dolby Theatre.

This comes after uncertainty due to a controversy over Gascon's past offensive tweets. Netflix was reportedly quietly distancing itself from Gascon's remarks, part of which was not sponsoring her at award shows.

Public response

Gascon's racist, problematic tweets were about Muslims, George Floyd's death, and the Black Lives Matter movement.

In light of the backlash, Gascon apologized, saying, "As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain."

Amid the controversy, she also pulled out of several award shows including the Critics Choice Awards, PGA Awards, BAFTA Film Awards, and SAG Awards where she was nominated.

Details about Gascon's Oscars appearance, including seating arrangements and potential red carpet interviews, are yet to be finalized, reported Deadline.

Meanwhile, she is also set to attend the Cesar Awards in Paris before the Oscars on Friday.

After a lengthy interview with CNN en Espanol earlier this month, Gascon announced that she would not be making any more public statements regarding the controversy.

In the same interview, the Spanish actor confirmed that she wasn't ditching the Oscars race either.

Notably, Gascon has made history as the first openly transgender actor to receive an Oscar nomination.

She was also the first transgender woman to win the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival, sharing the honor with Emilia Pérez castmates Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez, and Adriana Paz.

Moreover, she was the first trans woman nominated for film acting at the Golden Globes.

Gascon is represented by United Talent Agency (UTA).
