Anjana Reddy graduated from Purdue University in the United States and later earned a Master of Science in Finance from the University of Illinois. After returning to India in 2011 she got an idea of starting a business in the branded sports memorabilia sector.
Her first venture Collectabillia aimed to sell sports memorabilia. However the business model didn’t achieve the desired success. Without stopping anywhere Anjana explored new business avenues.
Turning Point: Universal Sportsbiz
Anjana’s big break came when she connected with Accel an investment firm which showed interest in her idea on the condition that she could secure a celebrity partnership. She successfully connected with cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar who endorsed her vision and also became an investor in her company Universal Sportsbiz Pvt Ltd (USPL).
While Collectabillia didn’t take off as planned Anjana noticed a strong demand for branded garments after selling Sachin Tendulkar-themed merchandise online. This observation led her to enter into the fashion and retail industry.
Building Celebrity-Backed Brand
Anjana devised a unique strategy: associating her brands with prominent celebrities. She launched several successful fashion brands like:
Wrogn endorsed and co-owned by Virat Kohli.
Imara a women’s ethnic wear brand.
Ms Taken supported by Kriti Sanon.
Single backed by Aditya Roy Kapur.
These brands initially gained traction through online platforms like Myntra and Shoppers Stop. Later they expanded into physical retail spaces including Pantaloons Retail and outlets owned by the Future Group.
USPL grew rapidly despite Anjana’s initial lack of expertise in the retail sector. She scaled the business through online and offline channels. The company has raised a total of $81.5 million in funding including $5.23 million in 2021. By 2018 USPL achieved a valuation exceeding Rs 1200 crore.
Anjana Reddy an entrepreneur with a net worth of Rs 300 crore is the visionary behind Universal Sportsbiz Pvt Ltd (USPL) a company valued at over Rs 1200 crore.
