Türkiye’s Professional Football Disciplinary Board has imposed a four-match ban on Fenerbahce head coach Jose Mourinho and a one-match ban on Galatasaray head coach Okan Buruk following controversial comments after the Istanbul derby.
On Monday, Galatasaray hosted Fenerbahce at RAMS Park in a highly anticipated match that ended in a goalless draw, with both teams unable to score.
After the derby, Mourinho made an inflammatory remark, saying, “Everyone on the other bench was jumping like monkeys.” He alleged that Galatasaray had tried to pressure the referee into showing a card to Fenerbahce’s young player Yusuf Akcicek early in the match. “I have to thank the referee because, in that situation, everyone on the other bench was jumping like monkeys,” Mourinho added.
Following the remarks, Galatasaray announced plans to file a complaint with UEFA and FIFA against Mourinho, accusing him of racism. A statement from Galatasaray read: “Since arriving in Türkiye, Fenerbahce’s head coach Jose Mourinho has consistently made derogatory remarks about Turkish people. Today, he escalated his offensive comments to an inhumane level. We will file a criminal complaint against Mourinho for his racist remarks and submit formal complaints to UEFA and FIFA.”
In response, Fenerbahce defended Mourinho, claiming that his words had been deliberately misconstrued.
Meanwhile, Galatasaray’s Okan Buruk also made remarks following the match, criticizing Mourinho’s extended post-match press conference. Buruk said, “The Crying One’s speech was a bit long. You know, he’s famous for crying. He cried for a long time here. He cried inside, went to the referee’s room and cried there, too. Let him keep crying.”
