Delhi Capitals rout table toppers Mumbai Indians – Talking Points
News Update March 01, 2025 06:24 AM

The Delhi Capitals eased to a nine-wicket win over the Mumbai Indians in their 2025 Women’s Premier League clash at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Friday.

The Capitals opted to bowl first and then restricted the inaugural champions to a partly 123/9 before chasing the total down with nine wickets and 33 balls to spare.

The loss took a massive hit on the NRR for table toppers Mumbai Indians, who looked clueless throughout the evening.

Here are the talking points from the match:

Openers continue to misfire

The openers – Yastika Bhatia and Hayley Matthews – continued to struggle with the bat for the Mumbai Indians.

Though they lost the wicket of Bhatia (11) in the powerplay, Mumbai Indians managed to score only 35 off the powerplay.

Matthews (22 off 25) fell soon after to leave the table toppers in a spot of bother.

Nat Sciver-Brunt fails

A rare failure with the bat for Natalie Sciver-Brunt, exposed the batting fragilities for Mumbai Indians. The Englishwoman battled hard for her 22-ball-18 with twin boundaries.

Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur got a decent start but could not make much of it, falling for a 16-ball 22.

Amelia Kerr also struggled in her stint in the middle and it was an unbeaten 10-ball 17 from Amanjot Kaur, which pushed Mumbai Indians post the 120-run mark.

Jess Jonassen shines

Left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen starred with the ball for the Delhi Capitals, finishing with figures of 3-25 in her four overs.

Her wickets included both Harmanpreet and Sciver-Brunt, two of Mumbai Indians’ best batters this season so far. She also cleaned up the young G Kamalini later in the innings as the Capitals expertly choked the opposition’s batting order.

Minnu Mani also struck thrice with her off-spin to remove Kerr, Sanskriti Gupta, and Kerala state mate Sajana Sajeevan in her three overs.

Shafali-Lanning make merry

Shafali Verma and Meg Lanning have been the best duo with the bat since the inception of Women’s Premier League. They once again joined hands for an 85-run opening partnership to thwart any hopes of defending the total for Mumbai Indians.

Verma took on the role of the aggressor early on, scoring 43 off just 28 deliveries. She hit four boundaries and three sixes before falling prey to Amanjot.

Skipper Lanning, however, ensured that she took the Capitals to safety without any further hiccups. She had Jemimah Rodrigues (15*) for company as they completed a season double over the Mumbai Indians.

Lanning remained unbeaten on 60 off 49 deliveries with nine boundaries.
