Every actor has a story to glory. Their story of highs and lows what they left what they achieved and how far they came. This is one such story of a top actress who was widely loved very popular and charmed with her personality. No it is not Deepika Padukone or Alia Bhatt or Katrina Kaif or any other contemporary name you might try to think of. This is about an actress from the bygone age of cinema.
She is ranked amongst the first female actress to achieve success some call her the first female superstar as well. She began her career in 1937 and made her Bollywood debut at he tender age of 16. He name is Mumtaz Shanti.
The Story of the Jubilee Girl
Mumtaz Shanti is an actress from the pre-partition era. She commenced working as a child artist in Punjabi movies. She made her debut in Bollywood with Basant as a 16-year-old. And well oh well he debut was a blockbuster hit! the film ran in the theatres for about 76 weeks. Her first film got her the glory. Star were shining bright for her as her next movie Kismet in 1943 also became a box office hit She was cast opposite to Ashok Kumar. This movie was the first Indian film to earn a box office of Rs 1 crore. It ran for a record three years at Kolkata’s Roxy cinema. This record was broken 32 years later by Sholay.
This is why she was given the moniker Jubilee Girl as her film proved to be jubilee hits. Jubilee hits are films that cross a milestone of 25 or 50 weeks in the theatres.
After this Mumtaz worked in many hit films like Ghar Ki Izzat with Dilip Kumar and Badalti Duniya and Dharti with Trilok Kapoor.
Mumtaz Shanti married Wali Shab a film director and writer from the pre-partition Bollywood era. He was the once who once spotted the talent in Mumtaz. Post p the partition of Indi and Pakistan the couple moved to Pakistan and left India. Mumtaz was 26 year-old at that time. Later Wali Sahab passed away due to heart failure but Shanti stayed in Lahore for the rest of her life until she breathed her last in 1989. Mumtaz Shanti died at the age of 63.
Mumtaz had quit her career at its peak but the innocence and her still remains in the heart of people.
