New Delhi: On March 4 Indian mens cricket team captain Rohit Sharma made history by becoming the first captain globally to reach the finals of all four ICC tournaments. He guided India to the final of the World Test Championship in June 2023 the ODI World Cup in November 2023 the T20 World Cup in June 2024 and now the Champions Trophy in March 2025. MS Dhoni guided India to the finals of the T20 World Cup in 2007 and 2014 the ODI World Cup final in 2011 and the Champions Trophy final in 2013 but he never had the opportunity to compete in the World Test Championship final. On the other hand Kane Williamson captained New Zealand to the ODI World Cup final in 2019 the World Test Championship final in June 2021 and the T20 World Cup final in November 2021; however under his leadership New Zealand did not qualify for the Champions Trophy final. Rohit who in June 2024 became the third Indian captain to secure an ICC trophy after Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni aims to claim his second ICC trophy on Sunday March 9 when India faces the victor of the second semifinal match between New Zealand and South Africa. Rohit appointed as India’s permanent white-ball captain in November 2021 has led the team to victory in all four matches of the Champions Trophy 2025 thus far. Under his guidance the top-ranked ODI team triumphed over Bangladesh by six wickets in the tournaments opening match held in Dubai on February 20 and followed up with another six-wicket win against Pakistan in their second Group A match. India played against New Zealand in the final Group A match in Dubai on Sunday (March 2) and achieved a victory by 44 runs. In the semifinal match against Australia on Tuesday the Indian team was set a target of 265 runs. With Virat Kohli contributing 84 runs off 98 balls India successfully reached the target in 48.1 overs losing six wickets in the process. In addition to Kohli Shreyas Iyer contributed significantly with a score of 45 runs while KL Rahul finished not out with 42 runs. The 32-year-old wicketkeeper-batter from Karnataka secured the victory for India by hitting a six on the first delivery of the 49th over bowled by Glenn Maxwell. Kohli received the Player of the Match award for his outstanding performance with the bat in the ninth ICC knockout game between India and Australia.
