There are often two kinds of people in this world: those who get to the early or those who try to rush through at the last minute - and it seems the latter is growing in popularity. A new viral TikTok trend called "airport theory" - which has amassed tens of millions of views - is attempting to justify a last-minute travel that leaves zero time for variables.
The trend shows ticketed passengers filming themselves arriving at the airport just minutes before their flight, then going through security and reaching their gate just in the nick of time. Putting your anxiety to the test, the crux of it is that you aim to arrive at the airport just 15 minutes before your gate closes. Most recommend allowing plenty of time to pass through security and arrive at the gate before boarding, suggesting around 90 minutes or more.
user @danaa.rain tested the theory concluding that she "will never get to the airport early again".
In a video that has amassed 1.4 million views she said: "Just learned about the airport theory. I got here at 10:32 and my plane board's at 11:15. Got through security, got some McDonalds and now I'm literally chilling at my gate.
"This is why I will never get to the airport early again."
Fellow TikToker @itslexismith, who was flying from Los Angeles Aiport, appears to agree with the airport theory. "It is currently 9:24 and my flight started boarding four minutes ago and we're in security right now. Let's see how fast we can get through this", she said.
She added: "Ok 9:29 and we are through security. It is now 9:44 and my flight is just now boarding so we made it. Airport theory is true."
In response one user said: "Airport theory is essentially a gamble. Yes, you will save time not having to get there early. But weigh that against the cost of missing your flight, because the unexpected happens. It's your choice."
And others agree that they're not so keen on the so-called hack.
One user said: "After working for an airline, my personal airport theory is getting to the airport two hours before domestic, and three hours before international flights."
Another said: "Tried it today, watched my plane drive past me while I was putting my shoes back on."
TikTok user @callmebelly said that they pushed it to the limit - but proved successful in boarding their flight on time.
They said: "I think we are going to get through security in less than 12 minutes. I used to show up an hour before my flight now I show up an hour maybe just 15 minutes before my flight. I'm like you just said don't that much time at the airport.
"I've just got through security and I have one minute to get to my gate so lets see if I can get to it. I'm guessing I'm going to have to run there but I think we're going to make it. And I made it in 15 minutes or so but if you miss your flight do not blame me."
