A campaign to boycott airport travel made possible by app aggregators Ola, Uber, and Rapido was declared by the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers’ Union (TGPWU). This decision is a reaction to the ongoing problem of these aggregator businesses’ cheap rates, which have negatively affected taxi drivers’ lives.
TGPWU claims that no firm action has been taken in spite of several requests for standard and equitable pricing for aggregator services made to the government and the transport department. In order to guarantee equitable compensation and long-term livelihoods for all gig and platform workers, the TGPWU urges that the government immediately create a consistent fare system.
“Our members have continuously complained about exploitative fare structures,” said Shaik Salauddin, founding president of TGPWU. These low fares devalue drivers’ time and effort in addition to jeopardizing their revenue. To establish a standard fare policy that is equitable for drivers and passengers, the government must act right now. Airport travel should be boycotted until rates are changed to reflect equitable and sustainable levels, according to TGPWU’s campaigns. The Union called for prompt government action to control and standardize aggregator pricing regulations and educated travelers about the difficulties experienced by gig and platform workers.
The union urges the public and drivers to join the fight for equitable compensation and treatment of platform and gig workers.
