Vehicle Scrappage Policy: The Government of India is taking important steps towards environmental protection, especially in the auto industry. A few years ago, the government implemented a policy to scrap old vehicles, and now a new change is being brought in this direction. Under the new rules, vehicle companies will have to use at least 8% recycled steel in the steel used in their new vehicles. This rule will be implemented from April and in the future it can be increased to 18%.
According to the new policy, steel obtained from old vehicles will be used in the manufacture of new vehicles. This will reduce pollution caused by steel mining and will also reduce the cost of purchasing new steel. Companies will have the option to use steel from vehicles that have completed their life or have been scrapped. For this, companies will either have to buy steel from authorized scrapping dealers or set up their own scrapping and recycling units.
Companies can run buy-back programs to scrap old vehicles. Apart from this, these activities have to be registered on the central portal of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The CPCB will issue an EPR certificate based on the weight of the scrapped steel, which vehicle companies can use to complete their recycling process.
There are only 82 registered vehicle scrapping facilities in India right now, but the government aims to increase this number to 100 in the next three months. Policies may be announced to set up new scrapping facilities in various states.
If your car has become old or has outlived its life, you can get it scrapped at a registered scrapping facility. During this process, you will get a certificate, which you can use as a discount on buying a new car. Thus, this new policy will not only help in protecting the environment but will also benefit vehicle owners.
