In a surprising turn of events Mukesh Ambanis Reliance Jio has announced a partnership with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to bring Starlink satellite internet services to India. This move follows months of disputes over how spectrum for satellite services should be allocated.
This agreement is subject to SpaceX receiving its own authorisations to sell Starlink in India Jio Platforms - the company that holds telecom and digital properties of Reliance group - said in a statement on Wednesday.
Jio will offer Starlink equipment through its retail outlets as well as through its online storefronts. Jio and SpaceX will also explore how they can boost each others offerings.
Jio On Partnership With Starlink
Through this agreement the parties will leverage Jios position as the worlds largest mobile operator in terms of data traffic and Starlinks position as the worlds leading low earth orbit satellite constellation operator to deliver reliable broadband services across the country including the most rural and remote regions of India the statement said.
The deal comes shortly after Sunil Bharti Mittal’s Bharti Airtel signed a similar agreement with SpaceX.
The deals by Airtel and Jio come weeks after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Musk in Washington to discuss issues including space mobility technology and innovation. During the trip the prime minister had also met Trump whose administration has upped the ratchet on tariffs against countries including India.
Ambani chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries Ltd was one of the select few invitees at the Trumps inauguration.
Airtel On Agreement With Starlink
Telecom operator Bharti Airtel also on Tuesday said it has partnered with Elon Musks SpaceX for providing Starlinks high-speed internet services to its customers in India.
This agreement is subject to SpaceX receiving authorisations to sell Starlinks satellite communications-based services in India Airtel said in a statement.
The agreement will enable Airtel and SpaceX to further explore how Starlink could complement and expand Airtels offerings and how Airtels expertise in the Indian market could complement SpaceXs direct offerings to consumers and businesses.
Bharti Airtel Managing Director and Vice Chairman Gopal Vittal said that working with SpaceX to offer Starlink services to Airtel customers in India is a significant milestone and further demonstrates companys commitment to next-generation satellite connectivity.
This collaboration enhances our ability to bring world-class high-speed broadband to even the most remote parts of India ensuring that every individual business and community has reliable internet. Starlink will complement and enhance Airtels suite of products to ensure reliable and affordable broadband for our Indian customers – wherever they live and work Vittal said
Rivalry Between Starlink And Jio Airtel
Both Jio and Airtel rivals in the telecom sector had previously joined forces to advocate for an auction-based system for spectrum allocation for satellite services. They argued that an administrative allocation would allow Musks Starlink to acquire airwaves at a significantly lower cost compared to the auction prices they had paid in the past.
In October last year the government had sided with Musk on the issue of allocating airwaves to be used for offering low latency internet services using satellite at a pre-decided price through administrative route.
Their deals announced within 12 hours of each underscoring Musks growing political and business clout in the current US administration. As the head of the nascent Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) the worlds richest man has emerged as a dominant force in Trumps second term.
