Companies like Starlink and OneWeb may soon launch their internet services in India. There is a lot of discussion here about Starlink in particular. Starlink has been trying to launch in India for a long time and now it seems that its wish is going to be fulfilled soon. According to a report by ET Telecom, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has established new requirements for testing and certification of satellite equipment used within India, including gateways and user terminals.

At a time when companies are waiting for the government to finalize the rules for spectrum allocation, these changes in the rules indicate that it is not long before Starlink Internet arrives here.

Only certified equipment will be allowed.

Only certified equipment can be used to provide satellite communication services in the country. It has been made mandatory from August 2024. On February 25, the DoT i.e. Department of Telecommunications issued standards for assessment related to 14 types of telecommunication equipment, including non-geostationary orbit (NGSO) satellite equipment including integrated gateways and user terminals. This mandate is going to come into effect 180 days after the notification date.

On the other hand, after the mandate which was implemented in late August, it has been said that no person or entity will import, sell, distribute, or use the identified telecommunications equipment without the necessary testing and certification of the Telecommunication Engineering Center. This mandatory testing and certification scheme for telecommunications equipment was started in the year 2019. The aim was to find out whether telecom equipment is negatively affecting the operation of the existing network. The scheme has been launched in several phases, with the latest announcement detailing the products included in Phase 5, which includes satellite communication equipment.
