New Delhi: Bangladesh has been grappling with economic challenges and has struggled to recover since Sheikh Hasina stepped down as Prime Minister. Under Muhammad Yunus leadership the economy has further deteriorated pushing the country toward bankruptcy. Owing to the current financial condition of the country the Yunus government is now planning to introduce a special law aimed at recovering billions of dollars allegedly sent abroad from Bangladesh.
Muhammad Yunus press secretary Shafiqul Alam stated that approximately USD 234 billion was embezzled during Sheikh Hasinas government from 2009 to 2024. Additionally around USD 17 billion was stolen from the banking system. He also mentioned that the government is currently investigating 11 key individuals and companies including former Prime Minister Hasina and her family members.
Meanwhile Bangladesh has been receiving a significant inflow of foreign funds. According to reports in the first eight days of March remittances worth USD 814.3 million were sent to Bangladesh which is over 7000 crore rupees in Indian currency. On average this means that approximately USD 101.8 million in remittances are arriving in Bangladesh per day.
6 to 7 percent of Bangladeshs GDP depends on remittances according to the Bangladeshi website BeFirst citing government sources. If the inflow of foreign funds stops the countrys economy starts to weaken. Bangladeshs economic situation was affected after Sheikh Hasina left the country but now an increase in international monetary inflow is being observed.
As per the report in the first eight days of March USD 231.35 million reached Bangladesh through government-owned banks. Additionally USD 68.45 million came through specialized banks USD 512.94 million through private banks and USD 1.54 million through foreign banks as remittances.
According to the data from Bangladesh Bank remittances worth USD 784.2 million were received between March 2 and March 8 while USD 3.8 million was received on March 1. In comparison Bangladesh received USD 2.52764 billion and USD 2.1852 billion in foreign currency in February and January respectively.
According to media reports Bangladesh received remittances worth 10500 crore taka in the first two months of 2024 alone. Additionally in just the first eight days of March approximately 7000 crore taka in foreign currency has already arrived in Bangladesh. Questions are now being raised about the sources of this money and its intended use.
