The Amarnath Yatra is one of the holiest pilgrimage of Hinduism, which goes to the Amarnath cave located in Jammu and Kashmir. This cave is famous for the naturally built ice Shivling of Lord Shiva. Every year millions of devotees come from India and abroad for this pilgrimage. The Amarnath cave is located at an altitude of 3888 meters (12,756 ft) and here Lord Shiva's self -proclaimed Himling (Shivling made of snow) appears. It is said that Lord Shiva told Goddess Parvati the secret (immortal story) of immortality, which was also heard by a couple of pigeons and they became immortal. Therefore it is called Amarnath.

On the full moon day of Shravan month (July-August), Shivling is in its full size and then slowly starts melting. There are two main routes for the journey. The Baltal road starts from Baltal, about 95 km from Srinagar. This journey is difficult due to steep climbing and narrow path, but can be completed in a day. Pahalgam route is a bit easy and most pilgrims choose this route. It takes 3-5 days to complete. This journey can also be done by horse, palanquin or helicopter.

Registration is necessary for the journey beforehand or through the bank. Health certificate is mandatory due to lack of oxygen at height. It is necessary to obtain a travel permit issued by the Government of Jammu and Kashmir. During the Amarnath Yatra, special philosophy of Sheshnag Lake, Mahagunas Top and Panchatarni are also performed.
