host was left utterly red-faced when he shared an embarrassing confession moments before interviewing a favourite. During Wednesday's visit to the studios, the former politician, 58, and his co-star Susanna Reid woke up the nation with some of the biggest stories hitting the headlines. This included the dramatic new tariffs Britain faces on the steel industry and the proposed changes to the justice system that could mean defendants will have to listen to victim statements in court.

Later on in the show, the dynamic duo welcomed soap siren Claire Sweeney - who plays Cassandra Plummer on the ITV soap - onto the programme where they discussed her new storyline on the famous cobbles. But things quickly took an awkward turn after the former MP admitted what the famous theme tune meant to him when he was a child.

After watching the trailer for the upcoming storyline, Ed confessed: "I do like that music, in our family it means it's time to walk the dog". Susanna immediately pulled a confused face as she turned back to her co-host and asked: "I beg your pardon".

He simply replied: "In our family, we had a adog and whent aht mucsic came on, the dog would jump up and get its lead" as she looked on in horror. And it was clear that the former politician insulted the soap star, as she sarcastically mumbled: "So, you're an avid watcher then, Ed."

It was at this point that Susanna saved the blissfully unaware presenter, as she asked: "Oh, was it at the end?" to which he replied: "Of course it was at the end!" The mum-of-three took a big sigh of relied as she chuckled: "Oh thank God, I thought you meant you would get up and walk the dog instead of watching.

"I don't think I'm going to be the only person who was thinking that", she warned as Claire agreed: "That's what I thought." Ed insisted: "No, I was watching when Tracey was born and now she's a big, big adult star. I do watch Coronation Street, I really do Claire."

Before the morning programme shared another segment of the ITV soap, Susanna warned viewers: "Do not walk the dog!" as her co-stars erupted into laughter. It didn't take long before fans flooded to X - formerly known as Twitter - to discuss the awkward moment online.

One user penned: "Ed the clown infuriating Claire sit down Ed go back home #gmb" as another branded him as "pathetic Ed Balls". A third chimed in with: "#gmb God Ed interviewing Cassie is so fkn cringe [crying emoji]."
