Why not to eat Baigan: There are many beliefs prevalent in Indian scriptures regarding eating brinjal. It is said that it takes at least seven days for the seeds of brinjal to digest, and if someone dies during this time, it is considered inauspicious according to the scriptures. Apart from religious beliefs, many ideas have also come up from the scientific point of view regarding the consumption of brinjal.   1. Considered inauspicious: Brinjal is considered “impure” in many texts, hence it is forbidden to eat it on special dates like Amavasya, Purnima, Ekadashi and Shraddha Paksha.
  2. Late digestion of seeds: According to scriptures, eggplant seeds take seven days to digest. If someone dies during this period, it is considered an inauspicious sign.
  3. Prohibited in Shraddha and Puja: Brinjal is not used in Shraddha and other religious functions as it is considered a 'rajasic' food, which can affect the sattva.

Contrary to religious beliefs, scientific research presents some different facts:

  1. Effect on digestion: Eggplant is rich in fiber and seeds, which may make it take longer to digest, especially for people with a weak digestive system.
  2. Allergy risk: Eggplant contains an element called solanine, which can cause allergies or gastric problems in some people.
  3. Impairment of iron absorption: According to some studies, certain elements present in brinjal can impede the absorption of iron, which can lead to problems like anemia.

Who should not eat brinjal?

  • People who have gas, acidity or stomach problems should avoid eating brinjal.
  • Pregnant women should not eat brinjal in large quantities, as it may contain natural abortifacients.
  • People suffering from arthritis and joint pain are advised to avoid brinjal, as it can increase inflammation.

Is it okay to eat brinjal?

Eggplant is rich in many nutrients, such as vitamin C, vitamin K, antioxidants and fiber. If consumed in balanced quantities, it can be beneficial for health. But, if you follow religious beliefs, it may be better to avoid eating it on special days.
