Rattan Tata and Noel Tata: Ratan Tatas will was opened on October 25 2024. In it he has given something to his younger brother Jimmy both sisters the driver the cook and the butler from his estate but has given nothing to his half-brother and the current head of the Tata Group Noel Tata. There is no mention of him in this will. This raises the first question of whether the relationship between the two brothers was not good. If that was the case what was the nature of their relationship? Who are those sisters of his who were very close to him but were not his fathers daughters? Overall whatever has come out in the media books and over the past few years regarding the relationship between the two brothers suggests that while Ratan Tata and Noel Tata may be the children of the same father there were perhaps distances and complexities in their relationship. For this reason he never declared Noel as his successor in the Tata Group during his lifetime as J.R.D. Tata did for him and Sir Nowroji Saklatwala did for J.R.D. Ratan Tata and Noel Tata were both sons of Naval Tata but from different mothers. Ratan Tata never supported him for leadership in the Tata Group. Reportedly Ratan Tata cited concerns about Noels experience and did not support his candidacy for leadership roles in the Tata Group. However in recent years it seems that they had reconciled. Noel has become one of Ratans close associates supporting him during corporate challenges. But after that when asked about his successor he said that this work would be entrusted to the Tata Trust after his demise. However he had the right to appoint his successor. When Ratan Tata was making his will he neither included Noel nor left anything for him. Reportedly Ratan had doubts about Noels qualifications for leadership roles within the Tata Group. However in recent years Noel was appointed as a trustee of the Tata Trust. Ratan Tata and Noel Tata never publicly expressed their differences. Ratan appointed Cyrus Mistry as the head of the Tata Group but later Ratan had disagreements with Mistry regarding his working methods. Interestingly Cyrus was Noels brother-in-law yet Noel supported Ratan Tata. Once Noel supported Ratan. He even gave him a power of attorney to vote on his behalf. This act of solidarity allowed Noel to become one of Ratans close associates strengthening their family bonds. This support later helped Noel to be appointed as the chairman of the Tata Trust suggesting a reconciliation between the two brothers.
